Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5?

The Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 is a three-way centre channel speaker in B&W's fifth-generation 800 Series Diamond range, delivering flagship centre channel performance in a horizontal cabinet. It uses a 25mm Diamond dome tweeter, a 6-inch Continuum cone FST midrange, and two 8-inch Aerofoil cone bass drivers. The Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 is available at Trutone Electronics in Mississauga, Ontario.

Which speakers does the Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 pair with?

The Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 is designed to pair with the 801 D5 or 802 D5 as the centre channel in a home theatre system. It shares the same 6-inch Continuum FST midrange, Diamond dome tweeter, and 8-inch Aerofoil bass drivers as those models, ensuring dialogue and on-screen effects match the tonal character of the front left and right speakers. This timbre-matching creates a seamless soundstage across the front of the room.

What drivers does the Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 use?

The Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 is a three-way design using a 25mm Diamond dome tweeter, a 150mm (6in) Continuum cone FST midrange, and two 200mm (8in) Aerofoil cone bass drivers arranged horizontally. It also includes B&W's Anti-Resonance plug, Biomimetic Suspension, Matrix bracing, and Flowport. This gives the HTM81 D5 a frequency response of 28Hz to 28kHz (+/-3dB) and a sensitivity of 90dB.

How does the Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 sound?

The Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 delivers flagship-level centre channel performance using the same Diamond dome tweeter and 6-inch Continuum FST midrange found in the 801 D5 and 802 D5. This ensures dialogue clarity and on-screen effects are tonally matched to the front left and right speakers. Its dual 8-inch Aerofoil bass drivers also provide substantial output, helping it keep pace with larger floorstanders during dynamic movie soundtracks.

What amplifier power does the Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 need?

Bowers & Wilkins recommends 50 to 1000 watts into 8 ohms for the HTM81 D5, with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and a sensitivity of 90dB. This matches the 801 D5 and 802 D5 it is designed to pair with, meaning any AV receiver or amplifier capable of driving those floorstanders comfortably will also be well-matched to the HTM81 D5. Speaker cable should be kept under 0.1 ohms impedance.

Will the Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 fit on a typical TV stand?

Buyers should check furniture dimensions carefully before choosing the HTM81 D5, as it measures 846mm (33.3in) wide and weighs 33.4kg. Its size reflects its three-way design with dual 8-inch bass drivers, which is larger than most centre channel speakers. For setups where furniture space is limited, B&W offers the optional FS-HTM D5 floorstand as an alternative placement solution.

How does the Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 compare to the HTM82 D5?

The Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 is the larger of B&W's two D5 centre channels, using a 6-inch midrange and dual 8-inch bass drivers compared to the HTM82 D5's 5-inch midrange and dual 6.5-inch bass drivers. The HTM81 D5 pairs with the 801 D5 or 802 D5, while the HTM82 D5 is intended for the 803 D5 or 804 D5. Buyers should choose the centre channel that matches the driver sizes of their front floorstanders for the best timbre match.
